Prom eyes Open Championship spot

Thailand’s Prom Meesawat hopes to fight his way into The Open Championship when he challenges for honours at this week’s US$1 million Thailand Golf Championship.

Prom together other Black Mountain sponsored players including Thongchai Jaidee, Berry Henson and Jazz Janewattananond will be amongst a strong field at the Asian Tour event that also features defending champion Sergio Garcia, two-time Masters winner Bubba Watson, reigning US Open champion Martin Kaymer and Ryder Cup heroes Lee Westwood and Victor Dubuisson.

Here’s what Prom has to say ahead of his title challenge this week.

“Obviously one of the goals is to try and qualify for The Open. It has been a while since I last played in a Major tournament so I’ll try my best this week. This is a great opportunity for more Asian Tour players to qualify for The Open.

I’ve been having this back problem since May. The muscle tightness in my back comes and goes but it really hurt after the King’s Cup when ran too fast on the 18th hole to celebrate with Thaworn (Wiratchant)!

“I feel better after resting. I went to the physiotherapist and acupuncture when I returned home and my back seems to be better. I did feel a bit of a muscle strain after playing this morning so hopefully it will be okay.

I’m very disappointed I didn’t get a chance to try and catch up with David Lipsky and Anirban Lahiri on the Order of Merit. We have a good field this week so hopefully I can have a good opportunity to have a good result.

I must get my health and body ready for this week. I’ve played here many times and this year the rough is up. If you miss the fairways, you will get into trouble but the course suits my game so I have to try and recover. I’m a straight hitter and that should help me this week.
