March 13: Black Mountain star Pelle Edberg of Sweden finished tied fifth at the True Thailand Classic presented by Chang after closing with a two-under-par 70 on Sunday.
The bubbly Edberg finished on 13-under-par 275, five shots behind the new champion Scott Hend of Australia, who enjoyed a memorable victory at the beautiful Black Mountain Golf Club.
Edberg battled into contention after the opening two rounds but slipped back with a third round 73. He struggled early in the final round when he dropped bogeys on holes four and five but bounced back with four birdies for a solid finish.
“I’m happy with the way I played this week. It is great to have such a good result in front of my home fans and on this golf course,” said Edberg.
After a pulsating final round, the big-hitting Hend finally prevailed by a single shot after being pushed to the limits by Piya Swangarunporn of Thailand.
“I stayed patient and let the course come at me. One of the boys gave me a fright but I’m glad I hanged in there,” said Hend.
“I’m very proud of myself. It is bloody awesome. This is my second European Tour win and eighth Asian Tour titles,” added the new True Thailand Classic champion.
