Edberg remains in contention at True Thailand Classic

March 12: Sweden’s Pelle Edberg had two closing birdies to thank for keeping him in the title chase after he ended the third round of the True Thailand Classic presented by Chang on Saturday with a one-over-par 73.

The Black Mountain sponsored player, who started the day tied for the lead with Australia’s Scott Hend, stumbled early with a bogey-six on the second hole.

Despite the windy conditions, he managed to recover with a birdie on six to turn in 36.

The Swede then mixed four birdies against three birdies in his inward-nine before signing for a three-day total of 11-under-par 205, three shots back of leader Hend in equal third place at the Black Mountain Golf Club.

“I had a rough back nine, so I’m quite pleased with the finish. Compared to the other two days, I thought I hit the ball pretty well except for two or three holes.

“A few mistakes there and all of the sudden you’re making bogeys. Hopefully I can keep the feeling going tomorrow. If I can shoot five or six under, I think I might have a good chance,” said Edberg.

Prom Meesawat meanwhile made his move with a 69 to take a share of eighth place which also featured Scotland’s Simon Yates at the US$1.75 million event which is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour.

“Today, the wind was quite strong, especially on the back nine where the pins were difficult, three on the right, three on the left. Have to be very patient. My round was very good although I still missed putts on 16 and 17,” said Prom.

Rikard Karlberg signed for a 68 to share 11th place with four other players that also included Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee.

Johan Edfors carded a 72 to take tied-34th place on 212 total.
