End of the road for Jazz and Henson at Open Qualifying Series-Thailand

March 7: Thailand’s Jazz Janewattananond’s courageous attempt to earn one of the four tickets to The Open Championship was met with a huge blow when the Black Mountain sponsored player was edged out in a four-way play-off that went all the way to the fourth extra hole at the Open Qualifying Series-Thailand on Friday. With Japan’s Masahiro Kawamura and Korean American David Lipsky falling out of contention earlier, it was then left to Jazz and Tsukada to battle it out for the fourth and final spot to the world’s oldest Major. The 18-year-old, who posted a two-under-par 70 in regulation play, watched in disappointment as his par putt stopped just on the edge of the 18^th hole, handing the last ticket to Tsukada who had parred his hole seconds earlier. American Berry Henson’s dreams of making his maiden Major appearance at The Open Championship will also have to wait as he missed out after signing for a 73. Henson endured a torrid time as he marked his card with three birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey to end his campaign with a two-day total of one-under-par 143. Jazz and Henson were part of an international field of 75 players from 18 countries vying for a place to The Open Championship which will be held at Royal Liverpool, Hoylake from July 17-20. Meanwhile at the weather-hit WGC-Cadillac Championship in the United States, Thongchai Jaidee stayed in the hunt as he was even-par through 12 holes before fading light halted the day’s proceeding.
