Henson’s reflections

Black Mountain sponsored player Berry Henson of the United States is hopeful of securing his second Asian Tour win when he embarks on a three-week competitive route to Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.

Henson’s last victory came in 2011 when he won the Philippines Open and he is determined to end his three-year title drought.

As he gets ready to take on the big boys at the Maybank Malaysian Open this week, the American took some time off the golf course to reflect on his career and what is needed from him to win again.

“It’s nice to get three tournaments in a row starting with this week’s Maybank Malaysian Open and I’ll try to get into a momentum and squeeze out a win from one of these tournaments. I’m hoping to find something this week.

My golf swing has been pretty poor of late and I haven’t been hitting the golf ball very crisp. The putter seems to be getting better but it’s tough to score when you’re struggling to hit the ball or make a putt. But all it takes is one round or one swing to get the birdies going.

I’ve been searching the missing link at the range. I know it’s not going to be fixed this week and I’ve got to play with what I’ve got. I’ll go to the first tee on Thursday and if I hit a draw, I’ll play with a draw and if I hit a cut, I’ll stick with a cut and try to play some good golf and get the ball into the hole.

I went to the European Tour Qualifying school last year and missed it by two shots. I’m hoping to play well in the next few events and I’ve got some status to play in some events in Europe in summer.

But this week is a big one and hopefully a good week here will open up some opportunities for the rest of the year.

Every time I come back to Malaysia, I get a good feeling and get good vibes. I played probably my best tournament in Asia in Clearwater (when he won the 2011 Clearwater Masters on the Asian Development Tour).

I would have won anywhere in the world that week as I played really well. I’m trying to get back those good memories every time I come back to Malaysia. It feels good to be here and hopefully I can find that winning mentality again.”
