Edberg trails leader by 1 at True Thailand Classic

Pelle Edberg of Sweden fired a superb seven-under-par 65 to trail the first round leader Peter Uihlein by one-shot at the True Thailand Classic presented by Chang on Thursday.

Edberg, who is sponsored by Black Mountain, said his home course knowledge at the beautiful course helped in his round of nine birdies against two bogeys.

Edberg was flying through his round and looked poised to take the outright lead as he was nine-under after 15 holes before dropping two bogeys over his closing three holes to sit in second position at the US$1.75 million event.

“I played really well. Hit some great tee shots, long and straight and it gave me a few birdie chances. I know the course better than my home course in Sweden which says a lot. I know my way around here,” said Edberg.

Simon Yates of Scotland ensured a strong presence of Black Mountain players on top the leaderboard when he returned with a 67 for tied fifth place.

Prom Meesawat of Thailand also enjoyed a strong start following a 68 which left him in a share of tied 14th place.

“I hit the ball really good. The pin positions were difficult today. I played this course many times and you need to know where to put the ball. I have that advantage because I’ve played here many times. When you know the course better, it makes it easier for you,” said Prom, a Hua Hin native.

Sweden’s Rikard Karlberg, Johan Edfors and Thai star Thongchai Jaidee, who are all Black Mountain players, shared 27th place after shooting matching 69s.
